Review: REVIEW: X-Ray Spex - Live @ the Roundhouse, London |
X-Ray Spex - Live @ the Roundhouse, London 2008 CD+DVD This live CD and DVD set was recorded at iconic 70s punk band X-Ray Spex's gig at the Roundhouse, in London's Camden Town, in September 2008. The gig marked the return of Poly Styrene and the 30th anniversary of the release of Germ Free Adolescents. I have never been a huge fan of live albums but the sound quality is crystal clear on this CD and it captures the esssence of the gig. If you were there it would be an absolutely essential purchase in order to relive the gig and if you weren't there it makes you wish you were! It features all the hits and most of the Germ Free Adolescents album, including Oh Bondage up Yours!, Art-i-ficial, I am a Cliche, Identity and The Day the World Turned Day-Glo. Poly Styrene's voice is great and distinctive as ever and she has boundless energy and rips through the songs with vigour and enthusiasm. The DVD captures all the energy of the gig and it is obvious that the band are loving it and that the crowd are also having a brilliant time. The picture quality is very good indeed and the sound is great. Poly looks great, and much younger than her 52 years! I especially enjoyed watching the encore of Oh Bondage Up Yours! where Poly had her daughter singing on stage with her. All in all this is a package well worth having, whether or not you were at the gig. It is very well produced and of high quality and is great value for money. Highly recommended! 4 out of 5 Jeanna
